2010 Wrestling Program

"If there is hope for the future , there is power in the present!"

Join the Fremantle Wrestling Club Today!

Fremantle Wrestling 2010 Program started last Wednesday , 02/17/10 @ the Fremantle PCYC 32 Paget Street, Hilton Session times are 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. all age group practice session (and an optional 7:00-7:30 pm one on one clinic session)

The Fremantle Wrestling program is designed to refine basic skills , introduce advanced wrestling technique, create live wrestling situations , and travel and compete against same age and weight peers in Wrestling Western Australia (WWA) state sponsored tournaments , as well as selected national events.

Training areas include a dedicated room capable of fitting two independent classes, and an open area / shared space, out in the gym where wrestling mats could be set up within 10-15 minutes for additional competition space, or for general tournaments.

The Wednesday training sessions have classes divided into two sections of the training area, beginners and advanced wrestlers. The beginner's class provides an introductory program to the sport of wrestling, and will teach wrestlers the fundamental skills and strategies necessary for success. The focus is on mastering the 7 basic skills of wrestling, "Stance, Motion, Level Change, Penetration, Lifting, Back Step, and Back Arch", the building blocks for all advance moves. Athletes will also drill basic technique and wrestle against same age and weight peers within the community program. The training is geared towards preparing novice wrestlers to competing with other beginners (same age and weight peers), and yes you will be ready, and yes you can even become a champion!

A CHAMPION is a person that gives every thing they have to fulfill a goal. Notice it does not say win!! Winning is simply the by-product of doing things right!

The advanced class are for wrestlers who mastered the basic skills and are ready for learning advanced wrestling techniques, and/or moving through an inventory of new moves at an accelerated pace. The goal is to provide advance wrestlers with a broad exposure of techniques in which they can choose the best technique and style of wrestling to develop their individual strategies necessary for success.

Training sessions are also geared towards introducing new skills sets through team games and other fun activities.

If you or your son or daughter is interested in Olympic style wrestling , we invite you to join one of the most successful wrestling programs in Western Australia – Fremantle PCYC Wrestling.

Wrestling is a sport in which any one may participate and be successful , regardless of size , since all wrestlers are matched by age and weight. This is a sport where no one single physical attribute determines success. As in many other sports , excellent physical conditioning is required. However , unlike other sports , wrestling requires the athlete to contend one-on-one with his opponent for several minutes at a time. There is no break in the action , no completion of the play and no one to pass the ball to. A wrestler must be totally focused on his task for the entire length of his match. In many respects , wrestling is similar to a martial art , requiring long periods of instruction and drill to perfect key moves so that these moves become second nature to the athlete. Wrestling teaches the important aspects of team sports , which are carried on through life , because most meaningful endeavors are achieved with the cohesive effort of a dedicated group of people. However , wrestling , probably better than any other sport , teaches the importance of individual accomplishments , because of the one on one contest. One on one contest teaches wrestlers the importance of commitment , perseverance , hard work , earning respect , sound health , and courage.

Over 22 former Fremantle PCYC wrestlers have successfully competed in National Wrestling events. 3 of our champions have gone on to successfully compete in International Events in New Zealand , Samoa , U.S.A , and India , and have been recognized as members of Australia ’s High Performance Team. The Australian High Performance Team competes in preparation for world class events such as the Commonwealth Games , and the Summer Olympics.

Here is how to become a member of the Fremantle Wrestling Program… print out and complete the attached PCYC membership application and Wrestling Western Australia Membership Application forms and bring them to your first practice along with a current and valid government issued ID. Your first wrestling practice is free!

The cost of club membership is ~$45.00 for those under 18 years of age , and $75.00 for 18 years and older

Training sessions are $5.00 per session , payable at the commencement of practice

State tournament costs are ~$15.00 for juniors and ~$20.00 for seniors (there are on the order of 3-5 state sponsored tournaments a year)

Pay your PCYC/WWA Club dues on or before your third practice

PRACTICES:

  • We encourage arriving at practice 5 minutes early so wrestlers can change and prepare for practice. If a practice session needs to be cancelled or changed , you will be notified.

· Since the Fremantle PCYC's gymnasium is a multi-use facility , parents are requested to assist in the set-up , cleaning and breakdown of the mats.

· Wrestlers must be dressed correctly for wrestling practice. This is to protect them , their partners and the equipment.

o ATTIRE: Suitable attire shall consist of:

§ Snug fitting T-shirt and sport shorts (to be worn at practice) Snug because it protects them and their partners from getting fingers and hands caught in loose clothing , or

§ Wrestling singlets

§ Wrestling shoes or bare feet (please do not buy Velcro wrestling shoes)

o Singlets and wrestling shoes must be worn at all tournaments (these items can be purchased through the club or at selected sport outlets)

TOURNAMENTS: We encourage you to have your wrestler participate in as many competitive events as possible. The experience gives them an opportunity to apply skills learned at practice. Last year , Fremantle wrestlers had the opportunity to attend more than 8 tournaments. Competition is generally held on Sundays , with an occasional Saturday event (mainly national events). They may begin as early as 9:00 a.m. and continue into the early after-noon , depending on how far your wrestler progresses in the competition. Entry fees for tournaments range from $15 to $20 payable at time of registration or weigh-in. Weigh-in are usually held at the last practice before the tournaments (e.g. , Wednesday night at individual clubs) , or the Friday before the competition 6 - 7 p.m. for State Championships and National tournaments.

The success of this program in achieving its athletic and character building objectives depends not only on the commitment of the wrestler and the all volunteer coaching staff , but also on each of the parents. We encourage you to get as involved as possible so that we may all have a hand in the success of our children and continuing the Fremantle tradition.

Thank You!

The Coaches

Wrestling has officially ended for 2009, starting again 1st of February 2010.

We had our official end of year party today, with a ten pin bowling session organised for the kids followed by dinner at a Chinese restaurant. It was great to see everyone again. Hope you all have a great Christmas and New Year.

In reality, Emma and I will still be training over the holidays. She has just gone off to India again for the Commonwealth Championships. Good luck Emma!

Training Update

Training update for the National School-Age championships in October.

Everything is going pretty well, and we are working very closely to my overall plan. As of this week (mid September), we have 2 more weeks of conditioning left before tapering off for competition.

Technically, I still think that we are too light on defence. Defending against attacks starts with having a really aggressive attitude where you must push yourself to work harder than the attacker. Too often, wrestlers are still looking for quick go-behinds or reversals against their opponent's attacks.

Our sparring has become very focussed and quite competitive. 3 minutes is now the norm for each round.
